NeuroReplete is a product that is often used in amino acid therapy to help restore proper neurotransmitter function. It contains 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) and L-tyrosine along with the cofactors necessary to convert these amino acids into serotonin and dopamine, respectively. On occasion, a person taking NeuroReplete may experience some side effects. The most common are listed here along with the proper solution. Additional side effects are noted in Part 2 of this series.
GI Upset Upon Starting NeuroReplete
The Problem: Approximately 1-2% of people experience GI upset or nausea upon starting amino acids. Typically, this starts with the first dose and gets worse with every subsequent dose.
The Cause: People that experience nausea or GI upset when first taking NeuroReplete are very depleted in serotonin.
The Solution: Talk to your health care provider. They need to adjust your NeuroReplete dosing so that you slowly increase the dose over time to allow your neurotransmitter levels to improve at a slower rate. Usually this involves taking only 1 capsule of NeuroReplete at bedtime and increasing the dose by 1 capsule every 3-4 days until the required dosing requirements are met.
Transient GI Upset/Nausea
The Problem: After the first week or two on amino acids, transient nausea develops in some people that lasts 45-60 minutes periodically during the day.
The Cause: A person’s tolerance to certain carbohydrates (usually grain-based) may change once neurotransmitter status has improved which can cause nausea when those carbohydrates are consumed.
The Solution: Rotate the foods consumed until the culprit is determined.
Heartburn
The Problem: Intense heartburn may occur shortly after taking NeuroReplete.
The Cause: If the capsules are not taken with sufficient water the pills may stick in the esophagus and dissolve. When this happens, intense heartburn may be experienced.
The Solution: Keep the pills in your mouth with water for 10-15 seconds before swallowing so that the capsules will easily slide down the throat. If necessary, take fewer capsules at one time.
Are you familiar with amino acid therapy for Parkinson’s as described by Dr. Marty Hinz??
Hi Steven,
Thanks for contacting us. We are very familiar with Dr. Hinz’s work; we have been working with him since 2001. To learn more about how we incorporate Dr. Hinz’s approach using amino acid therapy into the management of Parkinson’s, please visit: http://www.naturalsolutionsforparkinsonsdisease.com.

Hi Mary,
I’m very glad to hear you are doing well using these amino acids. I would suggest you contact the manufacturer; they should be able to get you the information you are looking for: https://chknutrition.com/.

Just started the Neuroreplete/ CIsreplete protocol. The first night after taking the second Neuro dose at bedtime, I awoke a few hours later with severe abdominal cramps which persisted into the next day. Really awful. I continued the Cis doses daily but stopped the Neuro until the next weekend as going to work after a night of cramps was difficult. Started up with only one Neuro at bedtime as suggested in the revised protocol and felt fine the first night but on night 2 after taking one Neuro, I awoke 4 hours later with some abdominal cramps – not as severe as first time but uncomfortable and distressing. Now not sure what to do. Do i need to tough it out on the one pill? Should I take half a capsule? Please help. Les.
Hi Les – thanks for contacting us. Please consult with your health care provider so you can find a dosing of amino acids that will work for you. Note, taking the product with food can often help.
If you continue to have GI issues, it may also be a sign of an underlying GI issue, which you will want to check out with your physician.
Good luck!

can neuroreplete and cysreplete cause burning urine. i have noticed this as a side effect, and have negative result for infection, is it the heavy vit c.
Thanks,
L
Hi Lou – this side effect has not been reported to me in the past with NeuroReplete, but I have certainly heard of this from people using other products that contain ascorbic acid; if this happens to you with ascorbic acid as well, this would be the likely culprit-

Dr. Chad
How long does it typically take to see any results? My son has PANDAS and OCD. He is following the protocol. His mood swings are horrible,as well as ocd symptoms. Desperately hoping he has some relief soon.
Hi Susan – thanks for contacting us. The length of time can vary dramatically, even assuming dosing is changed as quickly as possible (which is generally every 1-3 weeks), guided by urinary testing while working with a health care provider well-versed in amino acid therapy. Most of the time, people will begin to see a difference within 2-4 urine tests, but some people need to be nearly completely optimized before improvements are apparent.
Please speak with your provider about ways to increase the probability of seeing results as quickly as possible; good luck!!
Sincerely,
Dr Chad
